This easy crochet project is great for beginners. We use a large hook to make this rug, and I mean LARGE! That’s half the fun of this project, it goes by fast and you see instant results.

Of course you can have fun with color here. I used my favorite: teal. I just find teal such a soothing color, don’t you? To me it’s relaxing without being dull. But we all have our favorites, so use what makes you happy!

The Bernat Maker Big yarn is a jumbo yarn that comes in a good variety of colors. I had to get mine online because none of my local yarn stores had it in stock. But it was pretty easy to find online.

This yarn is great for home decor projects. I just love the stitch definition, it has almost the look of macrame but the feel is soft and squishy. I found it very easy to work with once I got the hang of the 15mm hook.

If you’re using the rug on a tile floor, you’ll definitely want to put a no-slip rug pad underneath.

Let’s talk about that hook! If you’ve never used this large hook before, you hold it a little differently than you would a regular crochet hook. There’s no flat space in the middle because you hold it more at the end. The hook is also a bit shorter for that very reason. I go over this and show you what I mean in the video tutorial.

If you’re new to crochet or consider yourself a beginner, I think this is a good project to start with. It’s easy to follow and the stitch pattern is a basic circle, a good skill to know for a crocheter. Plus, we use jumbo yarn and a big hook, so it goes by pretty fast.

Supplies: Size 15mm crochet hook, 9mm hook for weaving in ends

Yarn:
Bernat Maker Big: 1 skein (66 yds) each of deep teal (C1), ivory (C2), and turquoise (C3). Or any jumbo (#7) yarn, 198 yds.

Gauge: The diameter after round 2 = 7”.

Finished Measurements:
26” diameter

Abbreviations and Special Stitches
btwn: between
ch: chain
dc: double crochet
ea: each
inc: increase (2 dc in the same space)
rep: repeat
sl st: slip stitch
st(s): stitch(es)

Pattern Notes

  • Ch 2 at the beginning of a round counts as a stitch.
  • Beginning with round 2, work between stitches (not in the dc).
  • When changing colors, insert hook in the top of ch 2, lay new yarn color over hook and pull through. Cut (or drop) previous color and you are ready to work new color.

Directions

With 15mm hook:
Ch 4, join with sl st to 1st ch to form a ring.
Round 1: (C1) Ch 2, working in center of ring: 9 dc in ring. Sl st to join to top of ch 2. (10 sts)
Round 2: (C2) Ch 2, inc btwn ea st. Sl st to join to top of ch 2. (19 sts)
Note: Continue working between sts for remainder of pattern.
Round 3: (C3) Ch 2, *inc, dc; rep from * around. Sl st to join to top of ch 2. (28 sts)
Round 4: (C2) Ch 2, *inc, 2 dc; rep from * around. Sl st to join to top of ch 2. (37 sts)
Round 5: (C1) Ch 2, *inc, 3 dc; rep from * around. Sl st to join to top of ch 2. (46 sts)
Round 6: (C3) Ch 2, *inc, 4 dc; rep from * around. Sl st to join to top of ch 2. (55 sts)
Round 7: (C1) Ch 2, *inc, 5 dc; rep from * around. Sl st to join to top of ch 2. (64 sts)
Round 8: (C2) Ch 2, *inc, 6 dc; rep from * around. Sl st to join to top of ch 2. (73 sts)
Round 9: (C3) Ch 2, *inc, 7 dc; rep from * around. Sl st to join to top of ch 2. (82 sts)

Keep going if you want to make your mat larger (you will need more yarn). The next row will have 8 dc after the increase.  The following row will have 9 dc after the increase, and so on.

Use 9mm hook to weave in ends.

You’re all done! I hope you enjoyed this pattern! (My daughter is sure excited for her new rug.)
